Bus collides with tanker in China, killing 36

(AP) ? A double-decker sleeper bus rammed into a tanker loaded with highly-flammable methanol on a northern Chinese highway on Sunday, causing both vehicles to burst into flames and killing 36 people, state media said.

The official Xinhua News Agency said 39 people were on the long distance sleeper bus when it crashed and only three survived. The survivors were hospitalized, it said, but didn't say what condition they were in.

The tanker had just returned to the highway after an early morning rest stop when it was apparently rear-ended by the bus at around 2:40 a.m. close to the city of Yan'an in Shaanxi province, the official China News website said.

The bus had left Hohhot in Inner Mongolia at 5 p.m. Saturday and was headed south to Xi'an city, it said.

Xinhua news photos showed the charred metal skeleton of the bus rammed up against the back of the tanker.

An official with the local Communist Party propaganda bureau in Yan'an confirmed that the crash occurred but was unable to give details and was unsure of the death toll.

Road safety is a serious problem in China. According to Xinhua, poorly maintained roads and bad driving habits result in about 70,000 deaths and 300,000 injuries a year.

NYPD: Empire State Building victims hit by police gunfire

NEW YORK (AP) ? All nine people injured during a dramatic confrontation between police and a gunman outside the Empire State Building were wounded by gunfire from the two officers, police said Saturday, citing ballistics evidence.

The veteran patrolmen who opened fire on the suit-clad gunman, Jeffrey Johnson, had only an instant to react when he whirled around and pointed a .45-caliber pistol at them as they approached him from behind on a busy sidewalk.

Officer Craig Matthews shot seven times, and Officer Robert Sinishtaj fired nine times, police said. Neither had ever fired their weapons before on a patrol.

The volley of gunfire felled Johnson in just a few seconds and left nine other people bleeding on the sidewalk.

In the initial chaos Friday, it wasn't clear whether Johnson or the officers were responsible for the trail of the wounded, but based on ballistic and other evidence, "it appears that all nine of the victims were struck either by fragments or by bullets fired by police," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly told reporters Saturday at a community event in Harlem.

Police officials have said the officers appeared to have no choice but to shoot Johnson, whose body had 10 bullet wounds in the chest, arms and legs.

The officers confronted Johnson as he walked, casually, down the street after gunning down a former co-worker on the sidewalk outside the office they once shared. The shooting happened at 9 a.m., as the neighborhood bustled with people arriving for work.

The gunman and his victim, Steve Ercolino, had a history of workplace squabbles before Johnson was laid off from their company, Hazan Import Corp., a year ago. At one point, the two men had grappled physically in an elevator.

John Koch, the property manager at the office building where the men worked, said security camera footage showed the two pushing and shoving. The tussle ended when Ercolino, a much larger man, pinned Johnson against the wall of the elevator by the throat, Koch said. Ercolino let him go after a few moments, and the two men went their separate ways.

"They didn't like each other," Koch said.

After shooting Ercolino, Johnson, an eccentric T-shirt designer and avid bird-watcher who wore a suit every day, even when photographing hawks in Central Park, walked away as if nothing had happened.

Alerted by a construction worker, officers Matthews and Sinishtaj gave chase as Johnson rounded a corner and walked along Fifth Avenue in front of the landmark skyscraper.

A security videotape from the scene shows several civilians ? including three sitting on a bench only a few feet away ? scattering as the officers opened fire.

Police have determined that three people were struck by whole bullets ? two of which were removed from victims at the hospital ? and the rest were grazed "by fragments of some sort," Kelly said.

Two women with leg wounds and a man with a wound to his buttocks required surgery and remained hospitalized Saturday. They were listed in stable condition.

Both Matthews, 39, and Sinishtaj, 40, joined the nation's largest police department 15 years ago.

Matthews had drawn attention this year by suing the New York Police Department, accusing his superiors of unfairly punishing him for not meeting arrest quotas. A judge threw out the complaint.

The union representing the two officers didn't immediately respond to a message left seeking comment.

The shooting didn't deter tourists from flocking to the Empire State Building as usual on Saturday.

Patricia Flynn, 57, a retired schoolteacher, visited the building's peak with her elderly mother, who once worked in the skyscraper as a secretary.

"But I didn't tell her what happened," said Flynn, adding that her mother was unaware of Friday's shooting. "And she really enjoyed the view."

A group of 31 tourists from France held a meeting Friday night at their nearby hotel to decide whether to cancel their planned Empire State Building visit.

"We were scared, and we thought it was a risk," said Catherine Krukar, 38, a teacher.

But in the end, they went ahead with the visit, she said after descending from the observation tower,

"We know it can happen anywhere, and we wanted to see the Empire State Building," Krukar said. "It was beautiful!"

Forget iPhones And Free Food, This Story Illustrates - Business Insider

New Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer wants to give every employee an iPhone.?

She has decided that food in Yahoo's cafeterias will be free for full time employees.

She's going to keep the lights on later in Yahoo offices.?

All that is smart, and will go a long way toward making Yahoo a more attractive, productive place to work.

But a source of ours close to Yahoo employees says Mayer's real change to Yahoo is much simpler and deeper than all that.?

She's brought high expectations for how hard and fast Yahoo employees can work.

This source tells us friends of hers in Yahoo's product organization recently met with Mayer, and the CEO loved the product they showed her.

Then came something very new to Yahoo.

Mayer told the team she loves the new product so much that she wants it shipped by December 1 ? months ahead of the schedule the team itself had put together.

Mayer told the team they had one week to figure out if they could meet this deadline.

If, at the end of that week, the team decided they would?not be able to meet the December 1 deadline, Mayer said she would find a team that could.?

Whammo, right?

Attention: Yahoos.

Forget the iPhones. Forget the munchies.

The reason the lights are on later and dinner will be served is that you have got a lot of work to do, and the new boss wants it done fast and well.

When Fast Foods Become a Healthy Food Choice With Subway Diet

The Subway diet promotes a healthy dietary plan that can be obtained from eating at the Subway fast food chain which when coupled with regular exercise can be an effective means of losing significant weight without and risk.

The Subway diet became highly popularized when it was found out how effective are the nutritious foods prepared in Subway, a leading food chain restaurant that serves a variety of less than 6 grams of fats of sandwiches.

The Subway diet is a part of a promotional advertisement of a fast food chain to gain publicity by promoting their seven types of sandwiches that contain 6 grams or less fat to be part of a healthy dietary lifestyle of every individual who are patronizing their sandwich outlets.

The Subway diet further became sensationalized when a man named Jared Fogle credited his weight loss from a heavy 425 pound weight down to a lighter 180 pound. He shared his amazing Subway diet plan consisting of eating the Subway sandwiches twice a day coupled with a nice long brisk walk daily.

More people were inspired by the Subway diet of Jared that several more people attested how the Subway diet worked well for them. The typical Subway diet consists of eating the Subway 6 gram fat sandwiches twice a day while being complemented with some forms of mild to moderate exercises such as walking and lifting weights.

The Subway diet promoted the healthy message that even fast food chains can be healthy food providers. The featured Subway sandwiches on the Subway diet are low fat with 6 grams or less fat spiced with onion, lettuce, meat, green peppers, pickles, tomatoes served with freshly baked bread.

The main flavors of the 7 Subway diet sandwiches are roast beef, ham, veggie delite, roasted chicken breast, Subway club, turkey breast and turkey breast and ham. Each Subway sandwich on the Subway diet is with a nutritional guide in order to know how much gram of fats and calories are there.

The Subway diet regimen seems to work with individuals who are framing their own diet programs such as Atkins and South Beach Diets from the foods they eat from fast food chains. The Subway low carbohydrate diet is most suitable for these types of dieting programs.

The Subway diet becomes a popular dietary program to some although there is no such thing as official Subway diet. This type of diet generally reflects a twice a day meal at the Subway food chain and eating their low carbohydrate and low fat sandwiches that must be coupled with exercise regimen.

The Subway diet won the recognition to be the first fast food chain that promotes a healthy line of food choices from their menu of sandwiches. The Subway diet proved that even fast foods can have a healthy alternative of finding a dietary meal regimen that is as effective as the other types of dietary programs while still being able to enjoy the hassle free way of fastfood life.

Back to School: Powering Up Your Veg Kid | The Veggie Blog

    ?

If you?re a parent or caregiver then the rush to get your children ready to head back to school is well underway.? Clothes, school supplies, meeting teachers, books, backpacks and more structured routines are just some of the things on your minds.? But have you begun thinking about food?? This is a good time to do so because planning and preparation are the key elements involved in making sure your child continues to eat a tasty, healthy, vegan diet that will nourish his body as well as his brain.? And as the parent or caregiver, having a routine in place will make it much easier for you too which ensures success for everyone.

When thinking through a food plan, we?re talking about more than just lunch time.

Here are some questions to consider:

How much time will your child have for each eating time (breakfast, mid-morning snack, lunch and mid-afternoon)?

Will any of these eating times be en route between activities?

What are the lunch offerings at your child?s school?? Are there healthy Vegan choices on a daily basis? What is the cost, etc.?

How much time do you have to plan, shop and prepare food for all the above meal and snack times?

Morning Nutrition: Still the Most Important Meal of the Day

Did you know that kids who skip breakfast have a higher incidence of tardiness and being absent from school compared to those who break their fast regularly?? I?m sure you want avoid these two case scenario?s but there are other good reasons to make sure the whole family gets a good dose of morning nutrition(including you?and no, coffee and a banana isn?t a meal!).? First of all, breakfast eaters tend to either maintain a healthy weight or have a better chance of shedding extra pounds than those who try to skip meals in order to save calories.? Also, we need to consume most of the major nutrients first thing in the morning in order to turn our body systems back on after a long period of fasting while we sleep.? No breakfast means entering your day in a state of semi-starvation.? This will inevitably lead to physical, intellectual and behavioral problems, especially children attempting to meet the demands of a long day of learning and activity at school.? Here are a few tips:

    1. If time is an issue, set the alarm 15 minutes earlier to make time for breakfast.
    2. As much as possible, breakfast should be a sit-down meal for the whole family.
    3. Plan and shop for your breakfast choices ahead of time and prep the night before such as overnight oatmeal, cut up fruit or other ingredients.
    4. Make a hearty muffin mix and then keep the batter well sealed in the fridge.? Bake as many muffins as you want for that morning so it?s fresh and hot. Same goes for pancake batter!
    5. For younger kids, avoid the hassle of complaining and give them a maximum of two choices for breakfast (or none at all for that matter!)
    6. Breakfast should include some kind of whole grain, fruit and protein but I would also encourage you try and get a vegetable in as well.? This is easily accomplished if you make a green smoothie or do scrambled tofu with pepper, mushrooms, etc.
    7. Have a plan in place for a to-go breakfast option when the inevitable happens!
    8. Don?t forget hydration!? Make sure your child drinks some water before heading out or have a bottle within reach for the car ride or bus.? This one is oftentimes neglected in the midst of all the hustle and bustle but dehydration will quickly lead to a lethargic, slow-thinking student.

Snack Time: Keep It Quick and Easy

Scheduled snack time at school is usually a very quick activity, lastly about 5-10 minutes.? The easier you make the snack for your veg kid to eat, the more likely they are to get the whole thing in before moving on. ?Shop and/or prepare these items a week at a time.? Here are some ideas:

    1. Trail Mix (but be mindful of kids in the school with allergies and make it peanut and tree nut free).
    2. Pita Chips, carrots, celery, tomato or jicama with hummus or guacamole(clean, cut and store carrots and celery in water in the fridge)
    3. Dried fruit
    4. Granola bars
    5. Sliced apples with cheddar flavored almond cheese
    6. Peeled orange or other whole fruit
    7. Small whole grain bagel with vegan cream cheese
    8. Whole grain crackers with sunflower butter.
    9. Soy or Coconut Yogurt with a side of granola

    ?

    Lunch: Homespun Is Still Best

Again, time constraints are usually an issue but also the school lunch offerings might not be very vegan (beyond French fries, fruit, potato chips, etc.) so if this is the case then it?s better and even more economical to pack a lunch but this also means more time on your part.? There are whole sites dedicated to great vegan lunch options that I have included in the resource list below but here are a few things to consider.

    1. Packaging: Doing our part for the environment when it comes to reducing the amount of disposable plastic bags has never been cheaper and more readily available for purchase.? If you haven?t invested in reusable sandwich sacks and containers then now is the time to do it.
    2. PETA?s The Veggie Burger Project:? PETA has put together a campaigning package to make it easy to advocate for vegan choices in your child?s school lunch program.? Check it out here: http://features.peta2.com/Veggie-Burger-Project/
    3. Make it Fun, Creative and Loving: Think outside of the box with lunch time offerings.? Invest in a small thermos for hot soups, give them all the ingredients to build their own burrito, let them have an opinion and eventually let them prepare and pack their own lunches to encourage responsibility.? Also, don?t neglect to write little encouraging notes to tuck inside their lunch box.? Food provision is an expression of nurturing and care but so is nourishing their vulnerable hearts.

    ?

Just like every other aspect of preparing for the school year, food needs to be at the top of the list.? It might take a week or two into the start of school to iron things out so be patient and diligent as everyone adjusts.? And if you?re reading this and want to share some of your own ideas/recipes/favorite vegan on-the-go foods with the rest of us then please do so.? The more the better!
