University leaders: what do you need and expect from them? ? live chat

G20 leaders and key composite

Heard but not seen: do university leaders need to be more visible in a changing higher education landscape? Photograph: Eric Feferberg/AFP/Getty Images

They are the education leaders whose students barely know their names, let alone their faces. They are the sector figureheads who have remained remarkably quiet in a time of policy upheaval and funding reform. But with the changing landscape of higher education, and policy pushing for more transparency in the sector, it may be time for vice-chancellors to make themselves more visible.

Where do you think vice-chancellors need to focus their efforts in the year ahead? We're providing a platform for you to share your views on what you think the sector expects from its university leaders. Of course, different universities will have different priorities, but most are still involved in a delicate balancing act of teaching and research.

So what do busy vice-chancellors need to work on? Some, like Exeter University's Steve Smith, admit they're having a pretty "sweet" time at the moment, despite the challenges of keeping both staff and students happy. In our recent interview, he says: "As long as I'm being shouted at by both sides I've probably got it just about right."

Demographics are changing, with more students asking themselves whether they are getting value for money on their chosen course. But with fierce competition among universities to secure the highest quality of applicant (and that goes for research talent too) ? even Smith admits: "If I were up against some of them I don't think I'd stand a chance."

Whose interests should university leaders be lobbying for behind closed doors: cash-strapped research departments or cash-strapped undergraduates? And talking of money, how can vice-chancellors balance their books in the months and years ahead without compromising the core values of their institutions?

Join our live chat Friday 2 August from 12-2pm BST to discuss what the sector needs from its university leaders in the 21st century.

Here are some points we'd like to cover:

? Visibility of vice-chancellors on campus

? Meeting the needs of staff and students

? Representing universities in the public and press

? Role of vice-chancellors in lobbying / policy making

? Internationalisation vs UK higher education brand

? Transparency of leadership and governance

? Recruitment strategies

Crichfield retires at Solera Bancorp, Nash interim president

Lakewood-based Solera National Bancorp. Inc. announced Tuesday that Douglas Crichfield has retired as president and chief executive officer.

Ray L. Nash, who has served on the board since its inception, has been named interim president and CEO until a new person is hired.

"Doug has ably led Solera through a very difficult economic period," said Ronald E. Montoya, chairman. "We can understand Doug's desire to take life easier now that Solera is on solid footing."

Crichfield was named president and CEO in the fall of 2008 when the bank had less than $55 million in assets.

The company said it has now more than $170 million.

Nash, 61, was chief financial officer at Vectra Banking from 1989 until 1998 when it was acquired by Zions Bancorporation. Nash continued to work at Vectra until 2000.

Prior to Vectra, Nash was controller of the WestAmerica Mortgage Co.

Michael Jackson recorded three duets with Freddie Mercury in 1983.

Three duets that Michael Jackson recorded with Queen singer Freddie Mercury 30 years ago will finally see an official release later this year. According to The Times of London, the demos were recorded in 1983 at Jackson's home studio, but a larger project never came to fruition due to the singers' conflicting schedules.

"They were great songs, but the problem was time ? as we were both very busy at that period," Mercury said in an excerpt from "Mercury: An Intimate Biography of Freddie Mercury."

100 Greatest Artists: Michael Jackson

Jackson told Rolling Stone that he was a fan of Mercury's, and that Mercury had reached out to him about the possibility of working together on the Jacksons' next album in 1983.

A studio session was set up and the two recorded three songs, but Queen's manager, Jim "Miami" Beach, recalls that the duo's meeting was a bit tumultuous. "Mercury rang me and said: 'Miami, dear, can you get over here? You've got to get me out of here, I'm recording with a llama,'" said Beach.

The songs,"There Must Be More to Life Than This," "State of Shock" and "Victory" (which provided the title of the Jacksons' 1984 album), were recorded but weren't cleared for release until 2011.

Queen guitarist Brian May confirmed that the tracks will be released this fall, and added that the songs are "exciting, challenging, emotionally taxing. But cool."

In recent times, there are other and a lot more people who find themselves taking to lending options for a low credit score greatly. This absolutely provides extensive related to the fact several people out there have truly a low credit score circumstances to deal with they?ve got very past due on the lending options previously and so have received the somewhat unenviable trustworthiness of getting defaulters, which often creates a scenario in which they are rejected credit by most financial businesses.

But as well, they are doing will need credit considering that their earnings tend not to match up with their expenses, or are for some reason quit to stay circumstances in which funds are in critical will need ? perhaps a key health care expense comes up or there are more debts which need to be paid on most reasonable top priority schedule.

That?s exactly where we find lending options for a low credit score creating such a big difference being that they are supplied approximately those with a low credit score histories in it, so in this way, they pretty significantly surpass their labels in succeeding as lending options which are given out to the people with low credit score histories in it as well.

What about rates of interest?

This is typically the top worry on the minds of a lot of people out there they feel that given that they are now being supplied a benefit which doesn?t come across naturally or easily to those in their ilk, viz. previous defaulters like them, this benefit would surely occur at the hefty high quality.

Nicely, which is not exactly the circumstance. Predetermined that rates of interest on negative credit lending options are usually somewhat substantial but as well, it will be inaccurate to say that they?re astronomically substantial. Instead, one can merely say that they?re a little higher, maybe just somewhat eco-friendly tea?s health benefits lots of other this kind of lending options, keeping in mind their special standing as lending options given out even to anyone who has otherwise very past due on the lending options previously. So essentially this is often construed a lot more as a possible hard work on the part of the financial businesses to have a bit of of balance and danger minimization, given the profile of individuals, than truly an effort to gather huge earnings.

Simple On the web Access

One of the major causes of which these refinancing options for a low credit score have garnered a great deal water is the fact that they are available on the internet with complete relieve. Therefore 1 were to accomplish a basic look on common on the internet lookup search engines like yahoo for ?loans for very poor credit?, they might run into enough lenders who not simply supply these lending options but in addition feel the whole process on the internet with lowest fuss. This way, individuals can certainly take advantage the lending options that they search for, without needing to make any key further physical attempts in the operation.

Shots fired through windows of Surrey cab

After having a shot fired through his cab windows Saturday night, a Surrey taxi driver would rather move on to a different job ? if he could.

The concerned 37-year-old, who requested that his name not be used, said he is going to continue driving for Newton Whalley Taxi.

?I?m struggling,? he said. ?I?m going to school. I?m a full-time student. I don?t have any other options.

?If I find any other job, definitely I would quit this job.?

At around 10:30 p.m., the driver picked up two men and two women who asked him to take them to the nearby the Surrey Central SkyTrain station.

He was close to the station when another vehicle apparently pulled alongside his cab and one shot was fired through the rolled-up rear passenger windows.

The shot went through the windows and passenger compartment without striking anyone.

The cabbie didn?t see the vehicle.

?At that moment, I was already turning toward the SkyTrain station,? said the driver. ?I was concerned about my driving.

?When I heard the shot, there was a panic in the car and I pulled over. The passengers got off. They didn?t wait for the police.?

Although he admitted to being scared, the driver doesn?t believe he was the focus of the attack.

?I?m sure it was not me, they were not targeting me.?

But an incident like Saturday?s is hard to forget.

?For a while, it will be in my mind. I hope I can forget this incident.?

Surrey RCMP attended the scene Saturday but they were not commenting on the incident Sunday.

Police could not locate the passengers, who have not contacted authorities about the incident.

But like most cabs, the Newton Whalley vehicles are equipped with cameras.

The RCMP is asking anyone who witnessed the shooting or knows anything about it to contact them at 604-599-0502 or to call CrimeStoppers.

a few years ago, european and south african NGO s2arch undertook a project in montic, just south of johannesburg, to build the ithuba skills college that would provide education in natural sciences and english to underprivileged local children. in addition, all the design would be done by various european faculties of architecture and would be built by volunteers in collaboration with the local community and students. the most recent addition consists of the ithuba science center - two classrooms dedicated to biology and chemistry, a muti-use hall, and necessary support program - by students at the RWTH aachen university in germany. the concept took the regular rectangular footprint and cut an open public corridor through the center dividing two angular forms joined by a folded roof. a steel frame structure is supported on a poured concrete foundation and infilled with bales of a straw/clay composite - a traditional german insulation technique that creates a monolithic wall with high thermal properties. large operable openings allow for plenty of ventilation and light, while the double pitched metal roof overhangs to provide adequate shading, separated from the structure of the building forms to allow hot air to escape through the plenum.?

Co-founder of Russia's biggest search engine dies

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russia's largest search engine, Yandex, says its co-founder Ilya Segalovich has died. He was 48.

Yandex director general Arkady Volozh said that Segalovich died Saturday at a London hospital.

Volozh said in the company's blog that Segalovich was diagnosed with stomach cancer last year. He responded positively to chemical therapy, but then developed a brain cancer that caused his death.

Yandex announced Segalovich's death Thursday, but corrected itself within hours, saying that he was on life support with no brain function. Volozh said doctors removed life support after it became clear Segalovich couldn't be saved.

Segalovich, 48, founded Yandex in 2003 with Volozhh, his school friend. The company has been a Russian success story, with a share of 62 percent of the search engine market in Russia compared with Google's 25.6 percent.

China: Toddler Pulled From Pram And 'Murdered'

A two-year-old girl who was thrown to the ground by a man during a row over a parking space in Beijing has died, state media say.

A witness told the Beijing Times that the man, identified only by his surname Han, wanted to park by a bus stop in Beijing.

But the toddler's mother, who was on foot, would not move out of his way as she tending to her daughter at the time.

Han got out of his car and allegedly hit the woman before taking the girl out of her pram, holding her up and throwing her "forcefully" to the ground, said the witness, a street-stall owner surnamed Zhou.

"The baby made no noises after being dropped, not even a cry of pain," the newspaper quoted Zhou as saying.

Another man came out of the car and also beat the mother before the pair drove away, it added.

The woman was waiting by a bus stop on Beijings Keji road

Police reportedly found Han, who was released from prison this year after serving a sentence for theft, in a hot spring bathhouse and detained him.

"Han was put in criminal detention on suspicion of intentional homicide on Thursday afternoon," state news agency Xinhua said, citing the Beijing Security Bureau.

Han could face the death penalty if he is convicted of murder.

The incident sparked outrage on Chinese social media as weibo users vilified the attackers and expressed grief over the toddler's fate.

"When you come back in another life, dear baby, be sure to be born in another country," one user wrote.

Another weibo user called the attackers "perverse animals" and a third called for the death penalty as punishment.

"For this kind of murderer with an evil nature, the death penalty should be carried out immediately," the post said.

VW, Suzuki mulling rekindling relationship in face of legal battle ...

Suzuki and Volkswagen Grilles

Volkswagen and Suzuki have been undergoing marriage counseling in a bid to avoid finalizing their nasty divorce. The union has been troubled for some time, with Volkswagen claiming that it could affect operational decisions at Suzuki, and the Japanese brand's sniping and constant flirting with a certain Italian temptress causing rifts.

The matter first went to court in 2012, when Suzuki demanded VW get out, and leave its 19.9-percent stake in the Japanese brand in a box to the left. Now, Automotive News is reporting that the company will give the relationship one last shot, according to closed-door dealings between the two in London.

Still, it's understood that VW and Suzuki recognize the benefit of their alliance, and that it'd be in the best interests of the kids both parties to make things work. Spokespeople declined to comment to AN, but the newsmagazine spoke with Frank Biller, an analyst for LBBW in Stuttgart, who said, "Both companies stand to benefit if they can overcome the disagreements over leadership claims."

This argument over who wears the pants in the relationship has the potential to make or break the partnership, as sources close to the discussions told AN that if an agreement can't be reached, then a London-based arbitrator could get involved.

Suzuki last made waves when it up and pulled out of the US and Canadian markets last year after declaring bankruptcy.

Google Nexus 7 Teardown: Hey That's an Inductive Charging Coil

The ace team at iFixit has given the ol' teardown to the new Google Nexus 7 and they've discovered that the rear case is very easy to open, that it's taller, narrower and thinner and that there's an... inductive charging coil (the first iFixit has seen in a tablet). The battery inside the new Nexus 7 is slightly smaller too even though it's gained an hour of battery life (3950mAh vs the old 4326mAh).

A vote on immigration by October? Paul Ryan says its possible

Immigration reform has languished in Congress since the Senate passed its sweeping bill in June. But now Republican Congressman Paul Ryan has hinted that there will be some action on immigration in the House come October.

Ryan, the House Budget Committee Chairman, hinted at an immigration timetable at a district town hall in his home state of Wisconsin. The former vice presidential candidate said that the House is tentatively scheduled to start voting on immigration bills in October.

?Tentatively, in October, we?re going to vote on these bills,? Ryan told immigrant activists and undocumented immigrants at the town hall according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. He continued to outline exactly what type of bills the House would be looking at, mentioning that the goal was to bring five or six bills forward to deal with reform.

?We?re going to vote on a border security bill, we?re going to vote on an interior enforcement bill, like the workplace verification and the visa tracking. We?re going to vote on a legal immigration bill for visas, for agricultural workers, for skilled workers,? he said.

Congress leaves Washington for the entire month of August. The chamber is only in session for nine days in September, during which it will have to deal with spending bills to avoid a government shutdown.

At the town hall, Ryan described a plan for undocumented immigrants. He said that they would have to wait 15 years at minimum before they get citizenship. Then they would be able to receive a probationary visa.

?We want to give people an ability to come out of the shadows and get themselves right with the law,? he said.

The Wisconsin Republican has played a key role in pushing comprehensive immigration reform behind the scenes. At a special immigration meeting of House Republicans earlier this month, Ryan made the case with members of his party to find support for a path to citizenship.

Ryan was also asked by an audience member to respond to Steve King?s controversial comments on Dreamers. Earlier this week, King compared young undocumented immigrants to drug mules. In an interview with the conservative web site Newsmax, King expressed skepticism about providing a path to citizenship for Dreamers, saying not all of them are valedictorians.

?For everyone who?s a valedictorian, there?s another 100 out there that weigh 130 pounds and they?ve got calves the size of cantaloupes because they?re hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert,? King added. ?Those people would be legalized with the same act.?

Ryan, like many of his fellow top Republicans, condemned King?s remarks.

?Representative King?s remarks, I disagree with, I disavow, and they?re wrong,? he responded to the majority Latino audience.

As Ryan held his town hall in Milwaukee, legislators across the country continued distancing themselves from King and continuing to push for reform.

Two Democratic senators, Sens. Tom Harkin and Dick Durbin, are set to hold an immigration forum in the home district of none other than Rep. Steve King. The forum will feature Iowan immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children.

Speaker John Boehner called the Iowa Republican out in his weekly Capitol press conference on Thursday, saying that his remarks made reform more difficult. King responded by saying that Boehner ?should not speak? on the issue.

?Nobody has come out and said it?s up higher or lower, it?s 101 or 99,? he said. ?So then, I either had the wrong number or I picked the wrong fruit.?

Michigan's Taylor Lewan Says His College Career Has Been a Failure so Far

Taylor Lewan could be a millionaire right now.

In a week where second-team Big 12 tackles like Lane Johnson signed eight-figure contracts, Michigan's All-American was in a Chicago hotel ballroom, answering questions about Big Ten football. And he was doing so as an unpaid college football player.

But in Lewan's mind, he still has a lot left to accomplish in college. Per MLive.com's Nick Baumgardner, he?even considers his career to this point a failure:

"Failure," of course, is a matter of perspective.

Most observers would call Lewan anything but a disappointment. He started nine games as a redshirt freshman and was named a second-team Freshman All-American by College Football News. He started 13 games as a sophomore and earned second-team All-Big Ten honors. Then, last year, as a redshirt junior, he was an AP and Walter Camp first-team All-American.

So again: Failure is a matter of perspective.

Lewan?considers himself this way because of team, not individual, letdowns. He's won a BCS game (the 2012 Sugar Bowl) in his tenure, but has never won his conference. He loves his school even more than most undergraduates and wants to give it what he thinks it deserves.

Many were befuddled when?Lewan?announced his decision to?forego?this 2013 NFL draft. He was seen as a surefire top-10 pick, and had he left, it's likely he would have become just that

After spurning the league last spring, Lewan told MLive.com that he has "unfinished business" in Ann Arbor. According to CBSSports.com, he said:

I want to graduate. I want to improve to be an elite left tackle. I want to stand out there with my family on Senior Day. I want to get my 'M' ring. I want to lead some of these young offensive linemen. These are all things I would have been giving up if I left.

Lewan is entitled to his own opinion. On matters of himself, he's even more entitled than the rest of us.?But in calling his career to this point a "failure," Lewan has said and done something that Michigan fans disagree with wholeheartedly.

And that's a first.

Steve Jobs 'the Leonardo da Vinci of our generation'

Ashton Kutcher has compared Steve Jobs to Leonardo da Vinci.

The actor plays the late Apple founder in biopic Jobs, which details the entrepreneur's life from college dropout to successful businessman.

Steve died in 2011 aged 56 after suffering respiratory arrest in association with pancreatic cancer.

Ashton passed up the chance to meet Steve just six months before his death and explained on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno how he felt about this missed opportunity.

"I was working that day and couldn't go, and in hindsight I look back and think, I had the opportunity to meet the Leonardo da Vinci of our generation, and I missed it," he told the talk show host.

"I'll never forget the moment I heard that he died. I realised I'd taken him for granted, and taken for granted the contribution that he actually gave to society, and I actually had a real emotional moment."

Ashton also recently took to knowledge website Quora to speak about his role in Jobs.

The 35-year-old studied Steve in great detail in order to portray him correctly, even firing some of his own staff to see what having power is like.

"The idea of playing the role terrified me. The chance to portray someone who not only lived but who is still very relevant and alive in the zeitgeist seemed to be a once-in-a-lifetime challenge," he wrote.

"I loved what the film stands for. I think with the state of the global economy, inspiring young people to build things is vital. I wanted to remind entrepreneurs that Steve Jobs wasn't always 'Steve Jobs', that he struggled, that he failed, and that he rigorously persevered to build something great to improve other people's lives."

Sandy-Affected Homeowners Battle Insurance "Earth Movement ...

A New York senator is urging the Federal Emergency Management Agency to eliminate a federal flood insurance loophole affecting thousands of Sandy victims in New York and New Jersey.

The so-called "earth movement" clause in national flood insurance policies reads, "We do not insure for loss of property caused directly by earth movement even if the earth movement is caused by flood."

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand blasted the clause as "bureaucratic fine print" that was preventing Sandy-affected homeowners from getting back on their feet.?

Freeport homeowner Stephen Parke said it was "like?getting punched in the stomach from Sandy, then getting hit in the face when they deny you."?

Parke's home was condemned after Sandy floodwaters damaged its foundation. Then his insurance carrier in the FEMA-managed flood program refused to pay the full value of his $180,000 policy.

Instead, Parke has received only $85,000 on his claim. It's not enough to rebuild, he said. So nine months after Sandy, the damaged home remains vacant, with Parke, his partner and son living in a rental apartment.

The home is scheduled for demolition Wednesday.

"I had a policy. Why shouldn't our policy cover us?" asked Parke.

According to Parke, he will have to take a loan to replace the home Sandy destroyed.

"It's immoral," said Garden City lawyer Jerry Reisman, who represents about six homeowners fighting the earth movement clause.

"If you're buying flood insurance, you should be covered for a flood."

FEMA did not respond to requests for comment.

In the past, FEMA has reportedly said it is "following the law." Homeowners whose full claims are denied can appeal, but in Parke's case, his appeal was also denied last week.

"We thought we were protected," Parke said. "So did a lot of other people."

Array asthma drug meets main goal in mid-stage study

(Reuters) - Array Biopharma Inc said one of its drugs met the main goal of improving lung function in a mid-stage study among patients with mild to moderate persistent allergic asthma.

Array shares rose as much as 19 percent to $6.64 ? their highest in nearly five years ? on Tuesday morning.

Array said it was seeking a partner to develop the drug and Chief Executive Ron Squarer said there was substantial interest from key players in the field.

"In theory, with a partner we may look at higher doses of the drug. With the safety profile, there may be the potential to combine this drug with existing therapies," he said on a conference call with analysts.

Array, which develops drugs to treat cancer, diabetes and hepatitis C, has partnered with companies including AstraZeneca Plc, Amgen Inc and Eli Lilly and Co.

William Blair analyst John Sonnier said the study data looked comparable to a commonly used oral drug called Singulair.

Merck & Co Inc's Singulair generated more than $6 billion in annual sales before its cheaper generic versions became available in the United States last August.

Array said the mechanism of its drug, codenamed ARRY 502, had a potential role in allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis and the drug could be applied to the treatment of multiple diseases.

ARRY 502 inhibits a molecule that plays a part in increasing allergic inflammation.

The drug showed an improvement of 3.9 percent in pre-bronchodilator Forced Expiratory Volume in one second (FEV1), compared with a placebo.

FEV1 is the maximal amount of air that can be forcefully exhaled in one second and a measures of lung function.

The drug was well tolerated with fewer adverse events compared with the placebo.

The trial, which enrolled 184 patients in the Unites States, tested 200 mg of the drug dosed twice daily.

Asthma affects about 25 million people in the United States, and about 235 to 300 million worldwide, Array said.

Array shares were up nearly 12 percent at $6.23 in mid-morning trade on the Nasdaq.

California court denies bid to halt same-sex marriages in state

(CNN) ? California?s Supreme Court on Tuesday denied the San Diego County clerk?s request to immediately halt same-sex marriages in the state, the latest, if not necessarily last, key ruling in a years-long legal fight.

The decision was announced in a brief ruling, which said: ?The request for an immediate temporary stay or injunctive relief is denied.?

Kamala Harris, California?s attorney general, also tweeted the news. She is among the state officials who have supported same-sex marriage and opposed the implementation of Proposition 8, a referendum that limited marriages in the state to those between a man and a woman.

The U.S. Supreme Court paved the way last month for gay and lesbian couples to resume marrying in the state.

In a lengthy court document filed last Friday with California?s Supreme Court, San Diego County Clerk Ernest Dronenburg asked the court to order Gov. Jerry Brown, Harris and other state officials to abide by an ?immediate temporary stay? to once again halt same-sex marriages.

?Petitioner has been placed in an unsustainable position because, among other things, he has been threatened with legal action by the attorney general for exercising his public duties consistent with state law defining marriage as the union between one man and one woman,? Dronenburg argued.

Earlier Tuesday ? before the state high court?s decision came down ? same-sex marriage supporters gathered in San Diego to decry the efforts by Dronenburg and his supporters to continue their fight.

?Your religion, I respect it, I don?t agree with it,? LGBT rights activist Sean Sala said. ?But my religion and your religion do not run this land. The Constitution of the United States runs this land.?

At one point, Dronenburg himself came out to make his case, addressing reporters as his opponents stood around him. The clerk said he wanted California?s Supreme Court to halt same-sex marriages because of what had happened once before: such weddings took place only to be later ruled to be against state law.

?I asked for a stay because it?s cruel to set up people,? the county clerk said.

The back-and-forth over same-sex marriage in California has been playing out in the courts and in political forums for years.

In May 2008, California?s Supreme Court struck down the state?s ban on same-sex marriage, ruling that the state?s constitution gives ?this basic civil right to (marry to) all Californians, whether gay or heterosexual, and to same-sex couples as well as to opposite-sex couples.?

The tide turned a few months later, when 52% of voters backed Proposition 8 to halt gay and lesbian marriages.

Yet state officials declined to stand behind the prohibition, even if private parties did. A federal appeals court subsequently ruled that Proposition 8 was unconstitutional, though it still issued a stay on same-sex marriages until the U.S. Supreme Court could weigh in.

That happened June 26, when the nation?s high court ? in a 5-4 decision ? dismissed an appeal of the earlier lower court ruling on narrow, jurisdictional grounds.

Two days later, the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals officially lifted the previous injunction and same-sex weddings took place very soon thereafter. Proposition 8 backers tried to get the U.S. Supreme Court to again intervene, but Justice Anthony Kennedy refused to do so.

Since filing his petition, Dronenburg has become a champion for those who favor restricting marriage to heterosexuals. In a tweet several days ago, for instance, the American Family Association?s Bryan Fischer compared the county clerk to civil rights icon Rosa Parks for refusing ?to violate CA constitution on wedding licenses.?

Gay rights groups, like Marriage Equality USA, cheered Tuesday?s decision denying Dronenburg?s request.

Still, San Diego Gay and Lesbian News reported that the long, winding legal battle hasn?t necessarily come to an end.

?It?s not over!? tweeted that organization, which describes itself as ?a proud member of the San Diego LGBT community.? ?California Supreme Court still has to has to hear petitions to halt same-gender marriage in August.?

Why I can't live with Google Android - and why I want my iPhone back

Google thought that, in the long run, the plan would pay off in two ways. First, it believed that a free OS would push phone manufacturers to create better web-enabled phones, and better phones would let people spend more time on the internet. More time online means more opportunities to use Google's service and see Google ads ?ie, kerching! Android also provided a strategic benefit: if the manufacturers adopted Google's OS, the search company would retain some influence on the devices people used to get its services. If it weren't for Android, Google's customers would have been using devices controlled by Apple, Microsoft, Nokia, or RIM, all of which had incentives to limit Google's reach. Android lets Google control its own destiny.

The strategy worked brilliantly. Android is now the world's most popular mobile operating system. It's unclear if Google makes much money from Android directly ? by some estimates, Google makes as much from ads on Apple's iOS devices as it does on Android machines. But there's no question that Android has helped lower the prices of smartphones across the globe, which can only help Google's ad business. It's hard to call Android anything other than a resounding success.

Well, except for one small thing: most Android phones are rubbish. As part of a new year's resolution, I promised to trade in my beloved iPhone 5 for an Android phone sometime in 2013. I reasoned that, as a tech writer, I should spend more time with the world's most popular operating system. Phone companies have regularly sent me Android phones to test in the past, but I'd never given most of them more than a passing look ? I'd open them up, turn them on, get aggravated by their bad keyboards or poor touchscreens or frustrating add-on software, and immediately package them up and send them back.

This shouldn't be surprising ? most Android phones are very cheap, and you get what you pay for. Over the past few months, though, I've been testing two of the most expensive, most advanced Android phones on the market, the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One.

Altogether, I experienced the best and worst of Android ? and I saw, up close, Android's basic problem. I'd sum it up as follows. Google makes a fine mobile operating system. Some phone manufacturers make attractive, powerful Android handsets. These phones have the potential to be really wonderful machines, even as great as Apple's flagship phone. But then, at the last second, the manufacturers and the mobile phone operators snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. They ruined the phones' potential with unnecessary features and apps that lowered the battery life, spoilt the home screens, and made everything you wanted to do extra annoying.

This is one of the most important advantages Apple has over Android devices. When you buy an iPhone, it works exactly as Apple intended; it's never adulterated by "features" that the company didn't approve. But when you buy an Android phone, even a really great one, you're not getting the device that Google's designers had in mind when they created the OS. You're not even getting the device that the phone manufacturer ? Samsung and HTC, in this case ? had in mind. Instead, you're getting a bastardised version, a phone replete with software that has been altered by many players along the way, usually in a clumsy, money-grubbing fashion.

I noticed this immediately when I first turned on the Sprint-powered HTC One and Galaxy S4. When you run an iPhone for the first time, you go through just a handful of steps to get up and running: choose a language, add a Wi-Fi network, and log in to your Apple account. The same is true of the Google editions of the One and S4?just a few prompts and you're good to go. But not the carrier versions. I had to sit through more than half a dozen screens. I was pushed to sign in to several social-networking accounts. I had to create accounts with HTC or Samsung's own services.

Then, when I thought I was at last ready to start using my phone, another prompt came on the screen to let me know that Sprint was installing some software of its own. After another five minutes, my phone was finally ready to use ? but when I browsed through the menus, there was a whole bunch of software that I didn't need, including apps for Yahoo, Amazon, a Sprint app for watching television, and a WhitePages app. Why these apps specifically? Not because Sprint believes that you'll find them really helpful, but instead because it received a promotional fee. Congratulations on your new phone ? now look at all the ads.

You might not consider these pre-loaded apps such a big deal. We're all used to getting rubbish on new PCs; this is the same story, just on phones, and it's not such a big hassle to delete everything you don't need. But you shouldn't have to delete stuff just to get your phone looking like you want it. Plus, I suspect that many users probably don't even know how to delete these apps, so they just sit there, clogging up the home screen.

This isn't the worst thing about Android phones, though. It's the "skins" ? the modifications that phone companies make to Android's most basic features, including the dialling app, contacts, email, the calendar, the notification system, and the layout of the home screen. If you get the Play edition of these phones, you'll see Google's version of each of these apps, and you'll come away impressed by Google's tasteful, restrained, utilitarian design sense. But if, like most people, you get your phone for ?199 from a mobile phone operator, you'll find everything in it is a frightful mess.

Google's dialling app, for instance, uses a minimalist palette and big, readable, sans-serif numbers. Samsung's is a garish shock of mismatched colours, lines, and shadows. It's not just hideous but less functional. In the contacts pane, Google's dialler smartly displays people's names and numbers; you can dial just by touching the number. In Samsung's dialler, you've got to tap a contact's name, which brings up a new screen, which you've got to tap again to make a phone call. Meanwhile, if you click on a number in the call log, Samsung's dialler doesn't do the obvious thing and dial the number ? instead, it shows you another screen, and to dial the number you've to press the green phone icon, which isn't immediately obvious.

There are lots of annoying nuisances like this one, in which Samsung or HTC took Google's easy-to-use design and monkeyed with it for no good reason. Together, all these little bugs add up to a frustrating experience. In most cases, you can fix the problem; you can replace Samsung or HTC's apps with Google's version, you can remove the unnecessary stuff from your home screen, you can opt-out of flashy but terrible gimmicky features. But doing so is too much of a hassle for people who just want a phone that works right out of the box. If that's what you want, you've got two options. You can pay full price for a Play edition Android device. Or you can buy an iPhone.

Because I'm eligible for an upgrade with my carrier, I'd rather not pay full price for a Play edition Android. So, new year's resolution be damned, I'm sticking with Apple.

MSC Divina - Leisure Group Travel

MSC Divina

MSC Divina

MSC Cruises is one of those hidden secrets, because although she?s the industry?s third largest cruise line, her ships sail worldwide, with limited departures out of the US. But that?s changing. Starting this November the MSC Divina will be homeported in Miami and sailing year round from PortMiami, a first for MSC Cruises. The MSC Divina will be offering a variety of Caribbean cruises including 7 night/8 day Eastern and Western Caribbean sailings. And she?ll be adding two new dining venues as well as the cruise industry?s first Aqua Cycling.

Aqua Cycling

Aqua Cycling onboard MSC Divina

The MSC Divina was christened spring of 2012 by legendary actress Sophia Loren and the third ?Fantasia-class? ship. She has the line?s signature ?ship within a ship? the MSC Yacht Club, as well as other Fantasia class features and more. Accommodating 3,502 guests with 1751 staterooms, the MSC Divina has seven restaurants (including two new ones that will be added before she starts sailing from PortMiami), 5 swimming pools including the infinity pool, a bowling alley, theater, Internet caf?, conference center, gym and spa along with 18 bars and lounges. She also has kids and teens areas. The MSC Yacht Club, located on the upper foredecks of the ship is an exclusive VIP area that includes 69 luxury suites. Guests enjoy complimentary select spirits and wines, along with soft drinks, juices and mineral waters. Butler and concierge service is provided 24/7 for guests in these luxury suites, and there is a private dining room, along with private access to the spa.

Black & White Lounge

Elegant Black & White Lounge on MSC Divina

Before she starts sailing year round from the PortMiami this fall in November, the MSC Divina will be undergoing a few enhancements including some new features. As a result of the partnership that MSC Cruises already has with Eataly, the popular Turin-based chain and epicurean emporium, the MSC Divina is going to have two new restaurants and marketplace. Located in the area that had been the Tex Mex specialty restaurant will now include the upscale Ristorante Italia and Manzo, a spectacular regional steakhouse. Also a boutique Eataly marketplace will be added where guests can purchase authentic Italian and artisan products. MSC Cruises has found that their partnership with Eataly has been a terrific complement to their ships and first added it to their new MSC Preziosa earlier this spring.

Ken Muskat, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, MSC Cruises USA notes, ?Eataly is the perfect complement to MSC and the Mediterranean flare we bring as a key differentiator to the North American Market.? Muskat further explains, ?Much like MSC Cruises, Eataly is taking its Italian roots and expanding in North America. It is now one of the most talked about food emporium concepts with 16 locations around the world, including one in Manhattan and another opening this fall in Chicago.?

Aqua Cycling

Aqua Cycling view

The cruise industry IS about bringing in industry firsts and the MSC Divina will showcase a brand new one. She?ll be the cruise industry?s first ship to offer Aqua Cycling by Hydrorider. Noted as the newest fitness craze and featured on ?Good Morning America,? the aquatic cycles being used are made of marine stainless steel by Hydrorider in Italy. Placed in one of the pools for training and classes, guests onboard the MSC Divina will be able to participate in classes for a small fee, led by fitness professionals who?ve been trained in the benefits of cycling underwater, while enjoying energizing music. The aquatic cycles will be removed when classes are over, allowing guests to enjoy the pool for other relaxation purposes as well.

Guests onboard the MSC Divina can enjoy a wide variety of healthy dining experiences and options throughout the day. And for dinner, MSC Cruises has ?Deliciously Healthy Menus? that feature a selection of nutritionally balanced dishes, along with offering gluten-free dishes.

But with the MSC Divina, MSC Cruises is taking that to a new level and introducing their new ?Five Colors of Well Being.? Colors can influence our moods and lives, so with the ?Five Colors of Well Being,? there will be an array of nutritional drinks and spa treatments based on the colors. These include Green (relaxing), Red (anti-aging), Blue/Violet (cleansing), White (Purity), and Yellow/Orange (beautiful skin). It?s a fun and easy to remember approach, where guests can make selections based on their area of focus ? from healthy foods and nutritious drinks to spa treatment ? using the ?Five Colors of Well-Being Menu.?

MSC Divina

MSC Divina

MSC Cruises is a privately owned Italian cruise line. Her fleet includes 12 ships, which sail year round in the Mediterranean, as well as seasonally in the Caribbean, the Atlantic Ocean, the French Antilles, Northern Europe, South America, South and West Africa as well as the United Arab Emirates and the Red Sea. And starting this November, their MSC Divina begins sailing year round from PortMiami offering year round Caribbean Cruises. Guests onboard can enjoy the ?Mediterranean way of life? from gracious hospitality to dining.

With the MSC Divina now sailing year round from PortMiami, your group might want to consider the ?Mediterranean way of life? sailing to the Caribbean, and also enjoy some of the new features she?ll be offering. From the new industry first, Aqua cycling, to the newly announced Eataly restaurants, along with ?Five Colors of Well-Being,? the MSC Divina brings some other options to consider for your group.

As far as the MSC Divina? The announcements as far as Aqua Cycling and the new dining options being added are just a series of firsts. More will be coming, and the countdown is on!

Element Tree doesn't load a Google Earth-exported KML

I have a problem related to a Google Earth exported KML, as it doesn't seem to work well with Element Tree. I don't have a clue where the problem might lie, so I will explain how I do everything.

Here is the relevant code:

kmlFile = open( filePath, 'r' ).read( -1 ) # read the whole file as text kmlFile = kmlFile.replace( 'gx:', 'gx' ) # we need this as otherwise the Element Tree parser # will give an error kmlData = ET.fromstring( kmlFile ) document = kmlData.find( 'Document' )

With this code, ET (Element Tree object) creates an Element object accessible via variable kmlData. It points to the root element ('kml' tag). However, when I run a search for the sub-element 'Document', it returns None. Although the 'Document' tag is present in the KML file!

Are there any other discrepancies between KMLs and XMLs apart from the 'gx: smth' tags? I have searched through the KML files I am dealing with and found nothing suspicious. Here is a simplified structure of an KML file the program is supposed to deal with:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <kml xmlns="http://earth.google.com/kml/2.2"> <Document>    <name>UK.kmz</name>    <Style id="sh_blu-blank">     <IconStyle>         <scale>1.3</scale>         <Icon>             <href>http://maps.google.com/mapfiles/kml/paddle/blu-blank.png</href>         </Icon>         <hotSpot x="32" y="1" xunits="pixels" yunits="pixels"/>     </IconStyle>     <ListStyle>         <ItemIcon>             <href>http://maps.google.com/mapfiles/kml/paddle/blu-blank-lv.png</href>         </ItemIcon>     </ListStyle>   </Style>     [other style tags...]   <Folder>     <name>UK</name>     <Placemark>         <name>1262 Crossness Pumping Station</name>         <LookAt>             <longitude>0.1329926667038817</longitude>             <latitude>51.50303535104574</latitude>             <altitude>0</altitude>             <range>4246.539753518848</range>             <tilt>0</tilt>             <heading>-4.295161152207489</heading>             <altitudeMode>relativeToGround</altitudeMode>             <gx:altitudeMode>relativeToSeaFloor</gx:altitudeMode>         </LookAt>         <styleUrl>#msn_blu-blank15000</styleUrl>         <Point>             <coordinates>0.1389579668507301,51.50888923518947,0</coordinates>         </Point>     </Placemark>          [other placemark tags...]   </Folder> </Document> </kml>

Do you have an idea why I can't access any sub-elements of 'kml'? By the way, Python version is 2.7.

President Obama will bring economy message to Florida

President Obama will travel to Jacksonville on Thursday and deliver remarks at the Port Authority as part of a series of events scheduled to focus on the economy, the White House announced Monday.

The larger trip, which was announced last week shortly after the president spoke about racism in the wake of the not guilty verdict in the Zimmerman trial, is intended as part of a nationwide campaign aimed at emphasizing the administration?s attempt to build the economy by boosting the middle class. But in Florida, the president?s remarks also are likely to be viewed in the context of the racial issues festering since the Zimmerman verdict.

At his surprise visit to the White House briefing room last week, Obama called on states such as Florida to reexamine Stand Your Ground laws and he invoked concerns that the laws may ?encourage the kinds of altercations, confrontations, and tragedies as we saw in the Florida case, rather than defuse potential altercations.?

Since then, dozens of protesters continue a sit-in outside Gov. Rick Scott?s Tallahassee office, demanding the Legislature convene a special session to repeal the Stand Your Ground law and address the disparities in sentencing for black teens. The governor and legislative leaders have said they oppose changing the law and refuse to call a session.

Obama will begin his ?focus on the economy? tour in his home state of Illinois where he will deliver a major address at Knox College in western Illinois on Wednesday, the White House said.

Obama believes Washington ?has taken its eye off the ball on the most important issue facing the country,?? said White House senior advisor Dan Pfeiffer in an email Sunday. The president will ?lay out his vision for rebuilding an economy that puts the middle class and those fighting to join it front and center,?? he said.

Pfeiffer bashed the infighting that has paralyzed progress in Congress saying, ?instead of talking about how to help the middle class, too many in Congress are trying to score political points, refight old battles and trump up phony scandals.?

But Pfeiffer?s comments supplied a convenient opening for the Republican Party of Florida, which launched an ?Eye Off the Ball? series on its web site Monday to chide the president.

?We, too, have noticed the president?s lack of leadership on the economy,? said Susan Hepworth, RPOF spokeswoman. The party has posted a mock-up of the president throwing a football and suggesting his speaking tour is ?a Hail Mary pass on the economy.?

Kate Gosselin Clears Up Rumors About Her Kids Having Twitter ? Scared Of Backlash?

Kate Gosselin Clears Up Rumors About Her Kids Having Twitter ? Scared Of Backlash?

Considering that Kate Gosselin often tweets multiple times a day, I wouldn?t have been surprised to hear that she had her kids join Twitter as well. However, when a fan tweeted, ?@Kateplusmy8 is the twitter handle @ MadyAndCara the legit twitter of Cara and Mady??, Kate?s response was, ?NO! My kids DO NOT have Twitter!!?

It?s actually one of the few things Kate Gosselin seems to understand about social media ? that kids that young should be kept away from Twitter, especially when they?re the children of celebrities. Most often than not, stage parents will allow their child stars access to Twitter [I?m looking at you, Will Smith], and while they may be exposed to a bunch of wonderful people and encouraging comments, they are also met with a world of hate and jealousy. And often, it?s not even personal ? people on the Internet just suck, a result of their ability to hide behind their anonymity.

So Kate?s vehement denial and her decision to keep her children off Twitter was a smart move. Considering the amount of vitriol that Kate often gets on Twitter on a regular basis, her children would be subjected to a lot of hateful comments and could very easily be traumatized. Besides, Kate probably knows that she would get a ton of backlash for letting her kids do that.

What do you guys think about Kate Gosselin keeping her children off Twitter? Is it a smart decision from her end, or should she let the kids make up their own mind? Sooner or later, it will be up to them, so she definitely won?t be able to stop them forever. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
