They are the education leaders whose students barely know their names, let alone their faces. They are the sector figureheads who have remained remarkably quiet in a time of policy upheaval and funding reform. But with the changing landscape of higher education, and policy pushing for more transparency in the sector, it may be time for vice-chancellors to make themselves more visible.

Where do you think vice-chancellors need to focus their efforts in the year ahead? We're providing a platform for you to share your views on what you think the sector expects from its university leaders. Of course, different universities will have different priorities, but most are still involved in a delicate balancing act of teaching and research.

So what do busy vice-chancellors need to work on? Some, like Exeter University's Steve Smith, admit they're having a pretty "sweet" time at the moment, despite the challenges of keeping both staff and students happy. In our recent interview, he says: "As long as I'm being shouted at by both sides I've probably got it just about right."

Demographics are changing, with more students asking themselves whether they are getting value for money on their chosen course. But with fierce competition among universities to secure the highest quality of applicant (and that goes for research talent too) ? even Smith admits: "If I were up against some of them I don't think I'd stand a chance."

Whose interests should university leaders be lobbying for behind closed doors: cash-strapped research departments or cash-strapped undergraduates? And talking of money, how can vice-chancellors balance their books in the months and years ahead without compromising the core values of their institutions?

Crichfield retires at Solera Bancorp, Nash interim president

Lakewood-based Solera National Bancorp. Inc. announced Tuesday that Douglas Crichfield has retired as president and chief executive officer.

Ray L. Nash, who has served on the board since its inception, has been named interim president and CEO until a new person is hired.

"Doug has ably led Solera through a very difficult economic period," said Ronald E. Montoya, chairman. "We can understand Doug's desire to take life easier now that Solera is on solid footing."

Crichfield was named president and CEO in the fall of 2008 when the bank had less than $55 million in assets.

The company said it has now more than $170 million.

Nash, 61, was chief financial officer at Vectra Banking from 1989 until 1998 when it was acquired by Zions Bancorporation. Nash continued to work at Vectra until 2000.

Prior to Vectra, Nash was controller of the WestAmerica Mortgage Co.

Jackson told Rolling Stone that he was a fan of Mercury's, and that Mercury had reached out to him about the possibility of working together on the Jacksons' next album in 1983.

A studio session was set up and the two recorded three songs, but Queen's manager, Jim "Miami" Beach, recalls that the duo's meeting was a bit tumultuous. "Mercury rang me and said: 'Miami, dear, can you get over here? You've got to get me out of here, I'm recording with a llama,'" said Beach.

The songs,"There Must Be More to Life Than This," "State of Shock" and "Victory" (which provided the title of the Jacksons' 1984 album), were recorded but weren't cleared for release until 2011.

Queen guitarist Brian May confirmed that the tracks will be released this fall, and added that the songs are "exciting, challenging, emotionally taxing. But cool."

Shots fired through windows of Surrey cab

After having a shot fired through his cab windows Saturday night, a Surrey taxi driver would rather move on to a different job ? if he could.

The concerned 37-year-old, who requested that his name not be used, said he is going to continue driving for Newton Whalley Taxi.

?I?m struggling,? he said. ?I?m going to school. I?m a full-time student. I don?t have any other options.

?If I find any other job, definitely I would quit this job.?

At around 10:30 p.m., the driver picked up two men and two women who asked him to take them to the nearby the Surrey Central SkyTrain station.

He was close to the station when another vehicle apparently pulled alongside his cab and one shot was fired through the rolled-up rear passenger windows.

The shot went through the windows and passenger compartment without striking anyone.

The cabbie didn?t see the vehicle.

?At that moment, I was already turning toward the SkyTrain station,? said the driver. ?I was concerned about my driving.

?When I heard the shot, there was a panic in the car and I pulled over. The passengers got off. They didn?t wait for the police.?

Although he admitted to being scared, the driver doesn?t believe he was the focus of the attack.

?I?m sure it was not me, they were not targeting me.?

But an incident like Saturday?s is hard to forget.

?For a while, it will be in my mind. I hope I can forget this incident.?

Surrey RCMP attended the scene Saturday but they were not commenting on the incident Sunday.

Police could not locate the passengers, who have not contacted authorities about the incident.

But like most cabs, the Newton Whalley vehicles are equipped with cameras.

The RCMP is asking anyone who witnessed the shooting or knows anything about it to contact them at 604-599-0502 or to call CrimeStoppers.

a few years ago, european and south african NGO s2arch undertook a project in montic, just south of johannesburg, to build the ithuba skills college that would provide education in natural sciences and english to underprivileged local children. in addition, all the design would be done by various european faculties of architecture and would be built by volunteers in collaboration with the local community and students. the most recent addition consists of the ithuba science center - two classrooms dedicated to biology and chemistry, a muti-use hall, and necessary support program - by students at the RWTH aachen university in germany. the concept took the regular rectangular footprint and cut an open public corridor through the center dividing two angular forms joined by a folded roof. a steel frame structure is supported on a poured concrete foundation and infilled with bales of a straw/clay composite - a traditional german insulation technique that creates a monolithic wall with high thermal properties. large operable openings allow for plenty of ventilation and light, while the double pitched metal roof overhangs to provide adequate shading, separated from the structure of the building forms to allow hot air to escape through the plenum.?

Co-founder of Russia's biggest search engine dies

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russia's largest search engine, Yandex, says its co-founder Ilya Segalovich has died. He was 48.

Yandex director general Arkady Volozh said that Segalovich died Saturday at a London hospital.

Volozh said in the company's blog that Segalovich was diagnosed with stomach cancer last year. He responded positively to chemical therapy, but then developed a brain cancer that caused his death.

Yandex announced Segalovich's death Thursday, but corrected itself within hours, saying that he was on life support with no brain function. Volozh said doctors removed life support after it became clear Segalovich couldn't be saved.

Segalovich, 48, founded Yandex in 2003 with Volozhh, his school friend. The company has been a Russian success story, with a share of 62 percent of the search engine market in Russia compared with Google's 25.6 percent.
