A week before the debut of the 2014 CTS at the New York International Auto Show, Cadillac showed off its newest engine: a twin-turbo V-6 that makes 420 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. For those playing along at home, that's the same hp as Audi's 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 found in the S6 and S7, and 20 more than BMW's 4.4-liter twin turbo V-8.
The new engine, code name LF3, is based on the 3.6-liter V-6 found in the current CTS, but Cadillac claims 90 percent of the parts are new. A key feature of the turbo engine is the top-mounted water-to-air intercooler. Because it is integrated into the intake manifold, compressed air from the turbochargers has a short path to the engine, unlike a typical intercooler, which runs the intake air to a heat exchanger up near the radiator. (The LF3's intercooler does run its own independent coolant loop through a dedicated radiator). This reduction in length results in better turbo response time.
Further aiding response time is a wastegate that operates on vacuum pressure so it can operate even when the turbos are not producing boost. The turbos themselves, sourced by Mitsubishi, operate at 12 psi of boost. An onboard "weather station" keeps track of humidity, air pressure, and air temperature to constantly manage boost and ignition settings.
Paired to the new twin turbo engine will be GM's first 8-speed automatic transmission, sourced from Aisin. The naturally aspirated 3.6-liter, which continues on in the new CTS, also gets this gearbox with rear-wheel-drive. The base 2.0-liter turbo four (also found in the ATS) and the all-wheel-drive 3.6 stick with a 6-speed automatic.
The big news with the transmission is calibration. Four driving modes are available: Tour, Sport, Track, and Winter. Sport sharpens up the shift times, while Track also changes the throttle calibration for quicker response times. Winter mode enables second-gear starts and dampens the throttle response. The extra ratios also allow for a wider ratio spread and a drop in final drive ratio from 3.27:1 to 2.85:1 with no loss in off-the-line performance.
And speaking of performance, Cadillac says the twin-turbo CTS will do 0 to 60 mph in "well under 5 seconds." Fuel economy is also quoted as "high mid-20's on the highway."
