Ole Miss Coach Hugh Freeze said Tuesday that the swarm of comments and accusations on social media and elsewhere "didn't hurt my feelings" after the first-year coach reeled in a surprisingly strong recruiting class in 2013.
"If you get your feelings hurt at this level, you'll always be on a roller coaster ride," Freeze said at SEC Media Days Tuesday. "It really didn't hurt my feelings. Obviously you get tired of hearing some of the same things over and over.
"I'm very thrilled - not thrilled that we're going to have to end up playing them - but Mark (Stoops) at Kentucky and Butch (Jones) at Tennessee, and our guy at Virginia (Mike London), are doing so good in recruiting. it can be done."
Freeze signed a top 10 class which included three five-star players, among them defensive end Robert Nkemdiche. He was rated the No. 1 overall player in the nation and chose the Rebels instead of LSU and Alabama among others.
Even during the recruiting process and after signing day the internet and Twitterverse were filled with posts questioning how a program that lost 14 consecutive SEC games going into last season could suddenly become so attractive.
"It helps if you have some natural tie-ins and things we were fortunate to have," said Freeze who won four girls state basketball championships as a Tennessee high school coach. "Obviously, it's well-documented. I have great trust and faith in our compliance staff. They handle all those issues. Certainly we're human. If mistakes were made, we'll own up to them immediately and report ourselves.
"Yeah, you get tired of hearing those things. But it looks like it's going to stay with us for a while."
