Isaiah Osorio tops picks for Whittier All-Area Football Team

Get to know the first team: 2012 Whittier All-Area Football Team

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Isaiah Osorio, La Serna

With his superb play on both sides of the ball, La Serna High School's Isaiah Osorio went to the head of the class.

Osorio, who played on both the offensive and defensive line, especially excelled on defense, leading a strong Lancer unit by recording 58 tackles and 13 sacks. He also made two fumble recoveries and one interception.

The senior, who captured first team All-CIF honors and was named the Del Rio League's most valuable player, also played a vital role on the Lancers' offensive line in helping clear the way for quarterback Frankie Palmer, the Daily News offensive player of the year, and a talented backfield that included Luke Gonzales, Nick McCarty and Gio Long.

For his efforts, Osorio was named the Daily News player of the year. Osorio was especially a force in the second half of the season, collecting 10 of his sacks during a four-game span.

His impressive streak started with La Serna's 67-33 win over league rival El Rancho. Osorio played a major role in the victory by producing three sacks.

Osorio continued to shine during the next three games, which included league triumphs against Santa Fe and California and a 49-0 victory over Diamond Ranch in the first round of

the CIF-Southern Section Southeast Division playoffs.

In the Lancers' key 31-3 win against Santa Fe, Osorio led a terrific La Serna defensive effort by collecting nine tackles and two sacks.

Osorio then helped the Lancers capture the league crown with a 20-17 overtime win against the Condors. For the second consecutive week, he made nine tackles and two sacks.

Osorio followed that performance by turning in his second three-sack game of the season in La Serna's win over Diamond Ranch.

He also played a key role in the Lancers' 35-17 victory over West Covina in the CIF-SS Southeast semifinals by recording seven tackles.

Lancers coach Margarito Beltran had high praise for Osorio.

"Isaiah is a great kid," Beltran said. "He has a tremendous work ethic and is a good leader. I think his play is a reflection of all the hard work he has put in - not just this year but in past years." OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR Frankie Palmer, La Serna In his two seasons as La Serna High's starting quarterback, Frankie Palmer has turned in a stellar body of work.

After putting together a good sophomore season last year, Palmer stepped up his game as he guided the Lancers to their second consecutive CIF-Southern Section Southeast Division championship game appearance.

Palmer, a first team All-CIF selection, threw for 2,168 yards and 20 touchdowns as he completed 147 of 241 attempts. Palmer, who had a 61 percent completion percentage, also did a good job taking care of the football as he only threw three interceptions.

He also contributed to La Serna's ground attack, rushing for 300 yards and three scores on 99 carries.

For his efforts, Palmer was named the Daily News offensive player of the year. While guiding a balanced attack for the Lancers, Palmer threw for more than 200 yards three times this season.

One of his best performances came in a Sept. 14 nonleague matchup against traditional power Westlake, which won the CIF-Southern Section Northern Division crown and was a state open division championship finalist in 2011.

In leading the Lancers to an impressive 38-9 victory at Westlake, Palmer had a near-perfect day in throwing the football as he completed 15 of 18 attempts for 201 yards and two touchdowns.

Palmer put together a memorable two-game stretch in the latter stages of the season.

The first of those two games came Nov. 2 against archrival California. With the Del Rio League title at stake, Palmer rallied the Lancers from a 17-9 fourth-quarter deficit to a 20-17 overtime victory to capture sole possession of the league crown.

Palmer cut the Condors lead to 17-15 with a 13-yard scoring pass to Matthew Rosales and then tied the game with a successful two-point conversion that came on a pass to D'andre Sanchez. The Lancers' tying score came with less than a minute remaining in regulation.

Palmer, who was named the league's offensive player of the year, finished with 250 yards and two touchdowns against the Condors.

He then followed with a 241-yard showing in a 49-0 victory over Diamond Ranch in the first round of the CIF-SS Southeast Division playoffs. Palmer threw for four touchdowns in that game.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR Greg Gaines, La Habra, Jr.

La Habra High School defensive lineman Greg Gaines played a central role in the Highlanders' drive to the Freeway League crown and a second-round appearance in the CIF-Southern Section Southwest Division playoffs.

Gaines, who was named both first-team All-CIF and the league's most valuable player, led a strong Highlanders defense that allowed 235 points en route to posting an 8-4 overall record. La Habra's defense especially excelled in league play as it surrendered only 68 points in the Highlanders' run to a 5-0 mark in Freeway play.

Perhaps the Highlanders' best defensive showing of the 2012 season came in a CIF-SS Southwest Division first-round game against Los Alamitos. Lifted by a terrific defensive performance, La Habra came away with a hard-fought 10-7 triumph over the Griffins.

Gaines headlined a talented La Habra defense that also featured Daily News first-team selection and league defensive player of the year Julian Melendrez along with league first-teamers Zach Bretoi, Alex Bush, Michael DeArmond and Mike Ellis. The defense also included Adrian Lomelli and Noah Massman, who were both named second-team all-league.

With his terrific play, Gaines rose above the rest. For his efforts, Gaines was named the Daily News defensive player of the year. Gaines served as the difference maker for the Highlanders defense, recording 102 total tackles with 65 of them being solo.

He also recorded eight sacks, 16 tackles for loss, forced five fumbles and made three fumble recoveries.

La Habra's defense held opponents to under 15 points five times this season. In three of those games, the Highlanders allowed less than 10 points.

In a Oct. 26 league game against Buena Park, the Highlanders held Coyotes standout running back Deven Boston to 70 yards in a 37-3 victory.

Gaines was also a key contributor on the offensive side of the ball, rushing for 242 yards and 10 touchdowns while averaging 7.1 yards per carry. One of Gaines' best offensive games came in a 41-18 win over league rival Sunny Hills in which he ran for 92 yards and three touchdowns.

In La Habra's win over Los Alamitos, Gaines scored the Highlanders' only touchdown on a 5-yard run.

COACH OF THE YEAR: Margarito Beltran, La Serna

Beltran guided the Lancers to a second consecutive CIF-Southern Section Southeast Division title game appearance. Though they lost 33-25 to Downey in the final, it still symbolized a remarkable feat for the Lancers, who finished with a 12-2 overall record and won the Del Rio League crown by going on a perfect 5-0 run. For his efforts, Beltran was named the Daily News coach of the year. Beltran, who has coached the Lancers for six seasons, has put together an impressive 54-21 record as La Serna's head coach.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR: Ryan Esslinger, Whittier Christian, Jr.

Esslinger made opposing defenses take quick notice by making an impact in his first season as the Heralds' starting quarterback. The first team All-CIF selection, who was also named first team All-Olympic League, led a balanced attack that averaged 35.1 points per game. Esslinger threw for 2,736 yards and 28 touchdowns while completing 259 of 376 attempts. He also rushed for 757 yards and seven scores. In the Heralds' 47-21 victory over Heritage Christian on Oct. 13, Esslinger accounted for six touchdowns - passing for three and rushing for another three.
