Thanks To HTML5 This Website Can Fill Your Whole Hard Drive with Cats

Sometimes a browser needs to leave a little data on your computer, just a little 5-10KB nibblit, a cookie. HTML5 is a hungrier beast than that which came before it though, and sometimes wants a little more. Maybe 5MB or so. But that's where it should end. Thanks to a little HTML5 vulnerability, however, this site can and will fill your entire hard drive with trash. Specifically cats. Lots and lots of cats. More »

Put an End to Spoiled, Wasted Food with This Handy Chart

Put an End to Spoiled, Wasted Food with This Handy Chart The costs of wasted food go far beyond the money you may have wasted buying something and letting it spoil. We've talked about ways to stop wasting food before, but if all you really need to know is "How long will this stay fresh and how should I store it," this helpful chart will help.

This chart, sent over to us by our friends at Visual.ly, does a great job at listing some common foods and how long they'll stay fresh and safe to eat based on different storage methods (along with a few that you might be tempted to freeze but really shouldn't.) At the bottom the chart goes into detail about the differences between the "sell by," "use by," and "expires on" dates you commonly see on packaging at the store. Put simply, those dates refer to the quality of the food and how often a store should rotate its stock to ensure freshness?it has nothing to do with the safety of the food.

Its also worth noting that while the chart has good data, don't forget to trust your nose?if you've stored your food properly, you can usually beat most expiration dates and keep your food fresher, longer. For another reference, check out previously mentioned Still Tasty and type in the type of food you're curious about. Otherwise, click the chart below to enlarge, or hit the link below to see it at Visual.ly.

Geneticists Estimate Publication Date of The Iliad

Homer's Iliad Homer's The Iliad codex from approximately the late fifth-early sixth century B.C. Image: Iliad VIII 245-253 in codex F205

This story was originally published by Inside Science News Service.

(ISNS)?Scientists who decode the genetic history of humans by tracking how genes mutate have applied the same technique to one of the Western world's most ancient and celebrated texts to uncover the date it was first written.

The text is Homer's "Iliad," and Homer -- if there was such a person -- probably wrote it in 762 B.C., give or take 50 years, the researchers found. The "Iliad" tells the story of the Trojan War -- if there was such a war -- with Greeks battling Trojans.

The researchers accept the received orthodoxy that a war happened and someone named Homer wrote about it, said Mark Pagel, an evolutionary theorist at the University of Reading in England. His collaborators include Eric Altschuler, a geneticist at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, in Newark, and Andreea S. Calude, a linguist also at Reading and the Sante Fe Institute in New Mexico. They worked from the standard text of the epic poem.

The date they came up with fits the time most scholars think the "Iliad" was compiled, so the paper,?published in the journal Bioessays,?won't have classicists in a snit. The study mostly affirms what they have been saying, that it was written around the eighth century B.C.

That geneticists got into such a project should be no surprise, Pagel said.

"Languages behave just extraordinarily like genes," Pagel said. "It is directly analogous. We tried to document the regularities in linguistic evolution and study Homer's vocabulary as a way of seeing if language evolves the way we think it does. If so, then we should be able to find a date for Homer."

It is unlikely there ever was one individual man named Homer who wrote the "Iliad." Brian Rose, professor of classical studies and curator of the Mediterranean section at the University of Pennsylvania Museum, said it is clear the "Iliad" is a compilation of oral tradition going back to the 13th century B.C.

"It's an amalgam of lots of stories that seemed focused on conflicts in one particular area of northwestern Turkey," Rose said.

The story of the "Iliad" is well known, full of characters like Helen of Troy, Achilles, Paris, Agamemnon and a slew of gods and goddesses behaving badly. It recounts how a gigantic fleet of Greek ships sailed across the "wine dark sea" to besiege Troy and regain a stolen wife. Its sequel is the "Odyssey."

Classicists and archeologists are fairly certain Troy existed and generally know where it is. In the 19th century, the German archeologist Heinrich Schliemann and the Englishman Frank Calvert excavated what is known as the Citadel of Troy and found evidence of a military conflict in the 12th century B.C., including arrows and 5 feet of burned debris around a buried fortress. Whether it was a war between Troy and a foreign element, or a civil war is unknown, Rose said.

The compilation we know as the "Iliad" was written centuries later, the date Pagel is proposing.

The scientists tracked the words in the "Iliad" the way they would track genes in a genome.

The researchers employed a linguistic tool called the Swadesh word list, put together in the 1940s and 1950s by American linguist Morris Swadesh. The list contains approximately 200 concepts that have words apparently in every language and every culture, Pagel said. These are usually words for body parts, colors, necessary relationships like "father" and "mother."

They looked for Swadesh words in the "Iliad" and found 173 of them. Then, they measured how they changed.

Pointers to Help You Calm Anxiety about Internet Based - Professur ...

Web based dating has become ever more common in the last few years. When it originally began it was deemed a bit cheesy and shady. Now that ever more individuals are using the services, society is welcoming it more. However, many individuals are still apprehensive about the security of online courting and the absence of authenticity. There are quite a few dating experts who give relevant dating advice but not all the important information is relevant to online dating.

Fortunately, online dating advice is turning out to be a more popular niche for relationship coaches. There are even some experts who only really concentrate on Internet dating advice. This dating relationship advice gives guidelines on how to set-up your personal ad, how to stay in contact with the ideal prospects and even first date advice.

If you have never tried out an online dating service it may be worthy of a shot. Read a blog page or two by an expert on online dating and see if it sounds somewhat like something that you would be interested by. Then take into consideration signing-up for relationship coaching. This way someone will be with you every step of the way, to address your questions and hear your concerns. If you are not able to find a person who is only an online relationship coach, make sure to look up somebody who at least has past experience in the topic.

After breezing over a little bit of dating online advice we have noticed four major ideas.

1) Be safe. This should go without speaking. However most providers do there best to make security a main concern, it is vital to use your mind. Set security guidelines for yourself before you even start. For instance, on your first date make sure you stay in a community place. Meet up there rather than just having your date pick you up.

2) Know the basics. Before you make a mistake you regret, browse a little bit of dating advice online. Once more, we believe that coaching for relationships is fantastic. If you select not to employ a relationship coach, make sure you have a close friend or other individual to talk to. Often time just talking about something can help you make much better choices.
save on
#3 Be yourself. This is a bit of clich? dating relationship advice but it is important. The main way you can follow this during Internet dating is when establishing your profile. Naturally you want to put your best feet forward but it is also crucial to be honest. If you let possible dates know about your true self at the beginning, there is better chance you will find the person who will absolutely adore you for who you are. Plus, you will be more calm on dates knowing you can relax and be yourself.

4) Know what is important to you. Do not have a long list of inconsequential standards but know your core values. Finding someone who has the same viewpoints and values is totally necessary if you want a long-term relationship. Also keep in mind to know what your goals are in life and find that person who will help you on that path.

Those are the essentials. Hope they aided you to be a bit less worried and a little bit more self-assured. And best of wishes discovering a life long partner and ?supporter?.

infant 18227 C Section May Raise Childs Risk of Allergies, Asthma: Study

MONDAY, Feb. 25 (HealthDay News) ? Babies born by cesarean section are more likely than others to develop allergies, a new study says.

Researchers evaluated more than 1,200 newborns when they were 1 month, 6 months, 1 year and 2 years old.

By age 2, babies born by cesarean section were five times more likely to have allergies than those born naturally when exposed to high levels of common household allergens such as pet dander and dust mites.

The findings ?further advance the hygiene hypothesis that early childhood exposure to microorganisms affects the immune system?s development and onset of allergies,? study lead author Christine Cole Johnson, chairwoman of the health sciences department at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, said in a hospital news release. ?We believe a baby?s exposure to bacteria in the birth canal is a major influencer on their immune system.?

Babies born by C-section have a pattern of ?at-risk? microorganisms in their gastrointestinal tract that may make them more susceptible to developing the antibody immunoglobulin E (IgE) when exposed to allergens, Johnson said.

IgE is linked to the development of allergies and asthma.

The study was scheduled for presentation Sunday at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology in San Antonio, Texas.

The study found an association between cesarean birth and allergy risk, but it did not prove cause-and-effect.

Data and conclusions presented at medical meetings are considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Maks isn't 'Dancing With the Stars' in season 16

Maksim Chmerkovskiy is taking season 16 of "Dancing" off.

By Anna Chan, TODAY

When "Dancing With the Stars" unveiled its season 16 lineup Tuesday morning, one very popular pro was not included: ballroom bad boy Maksim Chmerkovskiy.

Rumors had surfaced in the days prior that Maks wouldn't be participating in the show this upcoming season, and Tuesday, he confirmed the news to TODAY.com.

"I just want to set the record straight to all of my amazing fans that I will unfortunately not be returning for this season of 'Dancing With the Stars,' " he said in a statement. "I?ve been a pro dancer on the show for about seven years now and am eager to explore other opportunities that have been made possible because of 'Dancing With the Stars.' I'm going to take this time to?dive into producing and acting, while fulfilling my sponsorship obligations. ?

"A big thank you to all of my fans for your never-ending support. I also want to thank the entire cast and production of 'Dancing With the Stars.' "

"We frequently rotate the professional dancers, so it is not unusual for them to rest a cycle,? ABC said of Maks taking a break. "We appreciate each of our dancer's dedication to the show, so this is a very difficult decision. Anna (Trebunskaya), Chelsie (Hightower), Maks and Louis (Van Amstel) continue to be a part of the?'Dancing With the Stars'?family."

This isn't the first time the passionate dancer, who joined "DWTS" in season two, has taken time off from the show. He took season six off after finishing second with Mel B. in season five.

Maks, who has always stood up for his partners on the show when he felt they were unfairly critiqued, has famously sparred with judges Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba for several seasons. In season 13, he even told head judge Len during a critique of partner Hope Solo that he should retire, and cursed Carrie Ann backstage to reporters.

Though the Ukranian pro is taking time off to pursue other interests, the ballroom won't be Chmerkovskiy free. Maks' little brother, Val, is returning for his fourth season, and is paired with teen Disney star Zendaya.

"Dancing With the Stars" kicks off on March 18 at 8 p.m. on ABC.

Will you miss Maks? Tell us on our Facebook page!

Despite tightening restrictions on campuses, study finds medical students still receive free meals and gifts

Boston A first-of-its kind national survey of medical students and residents finds that despite recent efforts by medical schools and academic medical centers to restrict access of pharmaceutical sales representatives to medical trainees, medical students and residents still commonly receive meals, gifts, and industry-sponsored educational materials. The study was completed by a team of researchers led by fourth-year Harvard Medical School student Kirsten Austad and Aaron Kesselheim, M.D., J.D., M.P.H., an internist and health policy researcher in the Division of Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics at Brigham and Women's Hospital and is scheduled to publish online this week in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.

"In medical school and residency, as trainees are learning the fundamentals of their profession, there is a need to ensure the education they receive is as unbiased as possible," said Dr. Kesselheim. "However, it is well known that promotional information and gifts from pharmaceutical companies can encourage non-evidence-based prescribing. Though many institutions have tried to insulate trainees from these effects, trainees' exposure to industry promotion is still quite high."

The surveys were completed by a randomly selected subset of more than 2,000 medical students and residents representing every medical school in the United States. Students answered questions about the frequency of their interaction with pharmaceutical representatives, the types of gifts pharmaceutical representatives gave them and whether they thought these interactions affected their learning. One-third of first-year students and more than half of fourth-year students and residents reported receiving industry-sponsored gifts. A majority of students reported that pharmaceutical industry interactions provided them with valuable education, even though a majority of students also acknowledged the interactions opened them up to bias. Additionally, a majority of students supported measures that would further reduce access of industry sales representatives to trainees.

"Medical schools and academic medical centers need to continue to work on separating students from industry promotion at this highly impressionable time in their professional development," said Austad. "As an alternative, medical schools should provide students with more education about how to interpret clinical trials and ways to approach evidence-based prescribing so trainees can learn to critically evaluate industry promotion when they become practicing physicians."

Tunisian secularists protest against new Islamist PM

Tunis (Reuters) - Thousands of Tunisians protested on Saturday against the new prime minister-designate Ali Larayedh, a hardliner from the main Islamist Ennahda party.

President Moncef Marzouki asked Larayedh to form a government on Friday, in the aftermath of the February 6 assassination of secular opposition politician Chokri Belaid.

Outgoing prime minister Hamadi Jebali resigned on Tuesday because Ennahda rejected his plan for an apolitical technocrat cabinet to prepare for elections.

Larayedh, the new premier-designate, is controversial because opposition secularists accuse the Interior Ministry which he headed of failing to curb Islamist violence.

About 3000 secularists flocked to the capital's main street Habib Bourguiba raising banners hostile to the Ennahda party and Larayedh.

They chanted "Larayedh out" and "The people want to bring down the regime".

Tunisia plunged into political crisis on February 6 when the assassination of secular opposition politician Chokri Belaid ignited the biggest street protests since the overthrow of strongman Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali two years ago.

Larayedh, 57, is viewed as part of Ennahda's hardline wing, which rejects any role for parties linked to the Ben Ali era.

A maritime engineer, Larayedh spent 15 years in jail under Ben Ali.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 image, ZTE Open Firefox OS phone spec list spied on MWC show floor

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 MWC 2013 image

Mobile World Congress may not officially start until Monday, but that doesn't mean that we can't start gathering information from the show floor today! A photo of Samsung's MWC booth has been sent to Engadget, and in the image we can see a large screen showing off the oft-leaked Galaxy Note 8.0. The shot shows a user holding onto the Note 8.0 itself with one hand (and likely a fairly wide grip) while the other hand wields an S Pen. The Note 8.0 fills in a gap in Samsung's Note family between the Note II and Note 10.1, and as this image suggests, its size gives users the ability to one-hand it and use the S Pen full-time.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 frequented the leak spotlight quite a bit in late January, showing up in various "in the wild" images and spec reports. According to the rumor mill, the Note 8.0 will feature an 8-inch 1280x800 display, 5-megapixel rear and 1.3-megapixel front cameras, 2GB RAM and either 16GB or 32GB storage. We've been expecting Samsung to formally introduce us to the Note 8.0 at MWC, and so long as this leaked shot from the show floor is the real deal, it looks like an announcement is indeed near.

Samsung's new tablet isn't the only upcoming product that's been outed on the MWC show floor today, as Engadget has also posted an image of a spec sheet for a Firefox OS-powered phone from ZTE. Dubbed the "ZTE Open," the handset apparently includes a 3.5-inch HVGA display, Qualcomm MSM7225A processor, 3.2-megapixel camera, 256MB RAM, 512MB storage, 1,200mAh battery and FM radio. That sounds like a fairly basic handset, but Mozilla has said before that Firefox OS is optimized for entry-level hardware, and products like this ZTE Open could provide another option for customers looking for an affordable smartphone. ZTE recently teased that its got a Firefox OS-related announcement planned for MWC, so it may not be long before we actually see the Open in the flesh plastic.

By M. Alex Johnson, staff writer, NBC News

The Obama administration urged the Supreme Court on Friday to throw out a section of a 1996 federal law that prohibits recognition of same-sex marriage.

The brief was filed Friday in United States v. Windsor, a case challenging Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA, the law that legally declares marriage to be only between a man and a woman. That section allows state and federal authorities to deny benefits to same-sex couples that are commonplace for heterosexual couples, like insurance for government workers and Social Security survivors' benefits.

Oral arguments are scheduled for March 27.

In its brief (.pdf), the U.S. bluntly declares: "Section 3 of DOMA violates the fundamental constitutional guarantee of equal protection.?

"The law denies to tens of thousands of same-sex couples who are legally married under state law an array of important federal benefits that are available to legally married opposite-sex couples," said the brief, which was signed by Solicitor General Donald Verrilli, the government's chief trial lawyer. "Because this discrimination cannot be justified as substantially furthering any important governmental interest, Section 3 is unconstitutional."

In a footnote, the brief mentions California's Proposition 8 and similar measures in other states as evidence that anti-gay discrimination remains a major problem.

In effect, the U.S. is asking the court to change DOMA to set a higher bar for courts to approve laws that discriminate against gay men and lesbians, Lyle Denniston, a Supreme Court expert, wrote on the influential ScotusBlog.

President Barack Obama announced in 2011 that the U.S. would no longer enforce DOMA, but "this is the first time the federal government has proposed that constitutional test in a gay rights case before the Supreme Court," Denniston writes. "The court itself has never specified just what constitutional standard it will apply in such cases, but it may have to settle that this term."

For monarchs to fly north, first they've got to chill

Friday, February 22, 2013

Monarch butterflies are well known for their ability to fly 2,000 miles south from North America to Mexico each fall and back again in the spring. Now, researchers reporting in Current Biology, a Cell Press publication, on February 21 have evidence to show that the butterflies would just keep on heading south if it weren't for the chilly weather.

The findings help to explain why the butterflies spend the winter on frosty mountaintops. They also imply that global climate change could profoundly influence the monarchs' migrations, the researchers say.

"The monarchs need the thermal microenvironment at the overwintering sites for the migration cycle to persist," said Steven Reppert of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. "Without that thermal stimulus, the annual migration cycle would be broken and we will have lost one of the most intriguing biological phenomena in the natural world."

Earlier work by Reppert's team found that monarchs rely on an internal compass and skylight cues to guide them in their long-distance travels south. Patrick Guerra and Reppert have now found that the butterflies rely on the same system for their return flight north.

They next wondered what triggers the switch in the butterflies' overall direction. To find out, they captured fall migrants at the start of their migration, subjecting them in the laboratory to the same changes in temperature and light that they would experience in the mountains of Mexico. Remarkably, after 24 days of such treatment, the butterflies headed north upon release.

Further study confirmed that the switch in flight direction depended only on the experience of cold, not on changes in day length. They also confirmed that butterflies brought in and protected from the cold kept right on flying south.

Given these discoveries and the recent availability of genetic and genomic tools for monarchs, Reppert said his team is now poised to understand much more about the biological processes underlying the iconic migration. And that could make all the difference for the monarchs' future.

"This increased understanding will help us protect the migration," Reppert said.

A Florida Woman Was Shot by an Oven

Among items on the short list of "things that shouldn't be stored in an oven," live ammunition ranks near the top—just below live babies and gasoline. That's because, as Myth Busters has taught us and one Florida woman learned this week, live ammo and high temperatures make for an explosive combination. More »

'Bachelor' Sean Lowe: Tierra 'duped' me

Rick Rowell / ABC

By Tierney Bricker, E! Online

Sean Lowe doesn't hold his emotional punches! Sean sat down with host Chris Harrison for "The Bachelor: Sean Tells All" special, in which he spoke honestly about feeling "duped" by polarizing contestant Tierra LiCausi, who is now engaged to another man. He also reveals who he wishes he would have kept in the competition instead of Tierra.

During the special, Sean also talked about his tense conversation with Desiree's brother Nate during Tuesday night's episode, admitting, "I wanted to punch him." But was Nate the reason Sean ended up sending fan-favorite Des home?

Read Ali Fedotowsky's take on the hometown dates!

Though tensions between Tierra and the rest of the ladies had been building all season, it came to a head in St. Croix, which lead to Sean asking her to leave before the rose ceremony after her emotional breakdown.

"When I watch it back, I'm like, 'Man I was such a fool,' because I really do feel like I was duped," Sean admits. "Oh man. My take is Tierra never should have come on the show. She's not suited for this show. She doesn't know how to handle herself in this environment. I hope that she's learned from this, but she's a woman who simply can't get along with her peers."

Sean maintains that he had no idea what was going on in the house with the controversial contestant and reveals, "Had I caught wind of everything the girl did earlier, I wouldn't have kept her. In hindsight, I wish I would have kept Jackie on the 2-on-1."

Find out Tuesday night's biggest TV moments

But Tierra wasn't the only villain this season as fans were shocked to see how aggressive Des' brother Nate was with Sean during her hometown date, saying he didn't think Sean really liked his sister and calling him "a playboy."

When asked by Chris if Des had told him about her brother, Sean says, "Des had told me that her brother had gotten into some trouble as a youth and he's kind of straightened himself out, but he's still a little wild at heart. She definitely didn't prepare me for what transpired. At first I even thought maybe he's joking, but after 30 seconds of him ranting, I started to realize he's not joking."

And the conversation with Nate brought out a side of Sean viewers had never seen before. "I really wanted to hit him. I really did, because I can't think of a bigger insult to hurl towards me because that's not who I am at all," Sean reveals. "Anyone who knows me knows I'm the furthest thing from a playboy. Attacking my character is the quickest way to get me heated, but I knew Des and her parents were sitting just inside the house. I didn't want to make this a bigger ordeal than it already was. So it took everything in me just to basically control my emotion."

Relive last week's biggest TV moments

Something viewers didn't see was that Nate "was the first person I spoke to that evening," Sean reveals, as a clip of the brother telling Sean he "seems like a nice dude" plays. "I chalk it up to him being a jack---," the Bach says of Nate's change of heart during the night.

But was Des' brother's behavior the reason Sean sent her home? "I think I would be lying to myself if I didn't say her brother influenced me a little bit; just picturing myself being in their family. I'm not sure I want this guy as my brother-in-law," Sean admits, "but there were other areas in my relationship with Des that were lacking."

Ubuntu Touch Developer Preview now available for supported Nexus devices

Ubuntu Touch Developer Preview now available for supported Nexus devices

Canonical's preview of a smartphone- and tablet-friendly flavor of Ubuntu has finally arrived for folks willing to flash a Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4 or a Nexus tablet. Shuttleworth and friends stress that the release is intended for developers and enthusiasts -- not those eyeing it as a daily driver, mind you -- and that it's not yet kitted out with its complete functionality. As of now, the Ubuntu touch dev preview contains the shell, core applications, WiFi networking, support for front- and rear-facing cameras and Android Developer Bridge tool connectivity. In addition, the operating system allows Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 handsets to connect to a GSM network, make phone calls and send texts. Along with the sneak peak, the Ubuntu SDK has been badged with the alpha moniker since it's flaunting a host of new features, including the ability to deploy and execute apps straight from the IDE.
