Former Indiana bishop loses battle to cancer at age 80 - Fox 59 News

A former Indiana bishop died over the weekend after losing his battle with cancer.

Bishop Emeritus John M. D?Arcy, 80, died early Sunday morning at his Fort Wayne home.? D?Arcy announced in January that he was diagnosed with cancer in his lungs and brain.

D?Arcy retired in 2010 after leading the Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend for 24 years.

His death comes on the 56th anniversary of his first mass as an ordained priest.

?I send my deepest sympathy to the family and friends of a great Hoosier church leader, Bishop Emeritus John D?Arcy,? said Gov. Mike Pence in a statement Monday. ?His commitment and dedication to the Catholic church and Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend spanned more than two decades and his courageous leadership will be greatly missed.?

Visitation will take place from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Fort Wayne.? The funeral will follow at noon.
