So it goes with the John McAfee saga, the stranger-than-fiction story of the antivirus software magnate and his life on the run.
He has been avoiding the Belizean police, who want to question him about the murder of his neighbor in the Central American country.
For a guy on the lam, McAfee can't stop talking, on his blog and his Twitter account and to the press, particularly about his whereabouts.
Today, he says he is Guatemala accompanied by his 20-year-old girlfriend and two journalists from Vice magazine, editor-in-chief Rocco Castoro and photographer-videographer Robert King. Castoro and King have confirmed that they are with McAfee shooting a documentary they describe as "epic." In the meantime, they, too, are writing blog posts along the way.
On Sunday, McAfee's blog claimed he had been captured near Mexico. On Monday, the blog confessed that McAfee had faked it all in a scheme involving a body double and a North Korean passport.
When one of the journalists with him accidentally revealed their whereabouts yesterday by tweeting a photo which contained data about the location where it was taken, McAfee blogged that this, too, was faked. He said he had falsified the data.
Today he says, he lied about that, and said the he and his entourage really are in Guatemala.
The whole story will no doubt one day become a made-for-TV movie. It involves murder, drugs, sex, escape, lies, misdirection, a pregnant woman, dead dogs, and all sorts of accusations leveled at the police, the media, and McAfee himself.
The Vice reporters say that, as of today, McAfee has hired a powerful Guatemalan lawyer, a former attorney general of that country, who also happens to be the uncle of McAfee's girlfriend.
"If all goes well" tomorrow, McAfee will be holding a press conference in Guatemala, his blog says. That may or may not be true, but the whatever happens next is guaranteed to be intriguing.
